SORAKAYA APPALU (BOTTLEGOURD PATTIES):-

                          Sorakaya appalu  is a tasty snack in most of the south Indian families. We can also have it as a breakfast.

            Sorakaya is a vegetable, high on water and rich source of vitamin C, K and calcium. It helps in maintaining a healthy heart and brings down bad cholesterol levels. The juice is also benefial for diabetic patients as it stabilizes the blood sugar level and maintains blood pressure.
            Most of the people don't like to eat sorakaya, but if you taste this snack you will definitely change your mind. Sorakaya has so many health benefits, so try to include it in your diet once in a while. 
              So, here is the preparation of sorakaya appalu, give it a try for yourself...

Ingredients: 
  • Grated sorakaya- 1 cup
  • Rice flour - 1 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies - 10 (2 tbsp)
  • Ginger - half inch piece
  • Chopped onions - 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 2 tbsp
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tbsp to 2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - 3 to 4 sprigs
  • Coriander leaves - hand full
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Water for mixing the ingredients if required.

Preparation:

  1. Firstly, wash and grate a medium sized bottle gourd and keep it aside.
  2. Then take 10 green chillies and 1/2 inch Ginger. Wash them and blend them to a coarse paste and keep aside.
  3. Now, take a wide bowl and add grated  bottle gourd, green chilli and ginger paste, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, sesame seeds, curry leaves, coriander leaves and mix well.
  4. Lastly add rice flour to the mixture and mix well. (Taste the dough and add salt if required, mix with water if required). 
  5. The dough should not be too hard or too loose ( should be like  chapathi dough).
  6. Heat oil in a pan for deep frying.
  7. Grease ur hands and make small balls with the dough and press them slightly and drop each of them into the oil.
  8. Fry them on a medium flame untill they turn golden brown and remove.
  9. Place fried sorakaya appalu on kitchen paper towels to remove excess oil.
  10. And sorakaya appalu is ready to serve.If you want, you can serve them with tomato sauce.

Tips: 

  • If you are a health concious, you don't need to deep frying them,  you can just fry them by using little oil on a tawa by flipping both sides till it turns golden brown.
